{"id":20889,"date":"2020-06-18T17:09:51","date_gmt":"2020-06-18T21:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/?p=20889"},"modified":"2025-04-21T01:56:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T05:56:37","slug":"almost-a-wonderful-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/almost-a-wonderful-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Almost A Wonderful Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Marie and I were at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/wagstowigglesthriftstore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wags-to-Wiggles<\/a> store (over towards Gatlinburg) for our weekly check-in.\u00a0 A vehicle pulled up out front and a young woman in a bathing suit got out, ran in, and said; &#8220;Can you help us, PLEASE?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The short version is: they found a parakeet wandering the parking lot at a McDonald&#8217;s in Gatlinburg, it is very friendly and obviously someone&#8217;s pet.\u00a0 They called the local Police, Animal Control, Sevier County&#8217;s animal shelter, all said they could not help.\u00a0 These folks were from Georgia, here on vacation, and on their way to go white water rafting.\u00a0 They can&#8217;t keep the bird and don&#8217;t know how to help find it&#8217;s owner.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parakeet-NOT-Arty-scaled-e1592513461274.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20890\" src=\"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parakeet-NOT-Arty-scaled-e1592513461274-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parakeet-NOT-Arty-scaled-e1592513461274-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parakeet-NOT-Arty-scaled-e1592513461274-449x600.jpg 449w, https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/Parakeet-NOT-Arty-scaled-e1592513461274.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Gwen, the store manager, gave us a wicker picnic basket from store stock to put the cute lil feller in.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She also called Stacy, the Manager at the Friends Animal Shelter in Newport, to see if she could take it.\u00a0 Stacy asked, &#8220;Is it orange and green?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Yes!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;I have a lost bird report on him.\u00a0 His name is Arty.\u00a0 His owner&#8217;s number is &#8230;&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Gwen called the owner.\u00a0 She lives in West Tennessee and lost Arty 17 days ago while on vacation in Gatlinburg.\u00a0 She put up fliers, and notified shelters, but had to go back home.\u00a0 She was coming back out next Monday to search some more.\u00a0 She has a good friend who lives in Newport who can care for him until she arrives.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We&#8217;re all boggling!\u00a0 What are the odds?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So Marie and I took the bird-in-a-basket back to Newport and into the shelter where The Friend was to meet us.\u00a0 We were especially careful to not let &#8220;Arty&#8221; out of the basket because there are several shelter cats who wander the halls and sleep on beds or chairs.\u00a0 Supposedly they are on vermin patrol, but I never see them hunting.\u00a0 I think they&#8217;re scamming the shelter.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When the friend showed up she was ecstatic that Arty had been found, but asked to see him before she took the basket.\u00a0 She peeked inside, &#8220;Oh &#8230; that is NOT Arty.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a parakeet.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Yeah &#8230;&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Arty is more of a parrot &#8211; much bigger.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We all glared at Stacy.\u00a0 &#8220;What?\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know?\u00a0 We don&#8217;t even DO birds here, I put up the flier as a courtesy.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The friend left to give Arty&#8217;s mom the bad news.\u00a0 A shelter volunteer set Not-arty up in a cat carrier with some water and bird seed (the finders bought him a small bag of seed) and Stacy began calling people who might have birds, or know someone who has birds, or might want to have a bird.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Turns out Stacy hates birds &#8230; ever since she watched Hitchcock&#8217;s The Birds, she&#8217;s had a deep fear of birds and wants nothing to do with them.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Well &#8230; it was <u>almost<\/u>\u00a0a wonderful story to tell.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marie and I were at the Wags-to-Wiggles store (over towards Gatlinburg) for our weekly check-in.&nbsp;
