\u201cHow do you do<\/em> that?\u201d some ask, as if there were some magic incantation that lets me create bylines with the wave of my hand.<\/p>\n You don\u2019t need magic, all you need are a few great ideas, a decent command of the English language and enough determination to keep working when the rejection letters roll in. \u00a0There *will* be rejections, you can be sure of that!\u00a0 Here\u2019s how I do it.<\/p>\n The best place to start is with the magazines and eZines that you read, or at least with publications that cover topics you are passionate about and participate in.\u00a0 What are your hobbies?\u00a0 What organizations do you belong to?\u00a0 What topics do you follow closely in your reading?\u00a0 These are things about which you have an abiding interest, some knowledge, and can write convincingly about.<\/p>\n Perhaps a great idea wrenches you from slumber<\/a> in the middle of the night or forms while you shower; it\u2019s pretty far out in left field of the ball park of your interests, but it\u2019s a great topic.\u00a0 That\u2019s good too.\u00a0 Write down the bones, research the facts and look for a publisher that handles that topic.<\/p>\n You will need The Writer\u2019s Market to help you find potential publishers.\u00a0 A trip to a well-stocked news stand can provide some leads, but TWM will list many more; some you are not likely to find at newsstands.\u00a0 Searching on-line will turn up some magazine web sites but, again, TWM will give you more information without having to hunt it down.\u00a0 The Writers Market is available on-line<\/a> or as a printed book:<\/p>\n![\"assortment](\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7237\/7161739415_084167c578_n_d.jpg\" "\\"Magazines")
