{"id":4047,"date":"2013-01-06T05:52:38","date_gmt":"2013-01-06T10:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allandouglas.com\/blog\/?p=4047"},"modified":"2025-04-21T01:56:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T05:56:41","slug":"pizza-and-a-movie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/pizza-and-a-movie\/","title":{"rendered":"Destinaton Moon, Pizza and a Movie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I recently wound up my <a title=\"Check out the series\" href=\"https:\/\/PineyMountainFoster.org\/thoughts\/?s=%22Pizza+Dude%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adventures of Pizza Dude<\/a> series, I could not resist sharing this headline and accompanying photos with you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese to Build Domino\u2019s Pizza on the Moon<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, you read that right. The Japanese division of Domino\u2019s Pizza has released plans to build a dome-shaped Domino&#8217;s on the moon, and would apparently support a drive-through suitable for space motorcycles (Lunazuki&#8217;s, no doubt). Destination Moon originally published by Scienceray.<\/p>\n<h2>Movie Review: Destination Moon<\/h2>\n<p>When <i>Destination Moon<\/i> went into production in 1949, everything about the project was state of the art. The science fiction great Robert Heinlein co-wrote the script, which was based on his novel <i>Rocketship Galileo,<\/i> and he served as technical advisor. Chesley Bonestell, whose artwork virtually defined the look of space travel at the dawn of the rocket era, produced the film\u2019s astronomical visions.\u00a0 This and inevitably won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects. \u00a0<i>Destination Moon<\/i> is even noted in NASA\u2019s official timeline of space-travel history and remains a milestone film.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Robert Heinlein was one of my favorite authors while I grew up.\u00a0 I liked his no-nonsense approach to Science Fiction.\u00a0 So when I saw that he was not only the author of the original story, but the technical advisor on the movie itself I knew this would be one I had to see.<\/p>\n<p>The movie now seems quaint and its depiction of man\u2019s first lunar landing is inaccurate on some points.\u00a0 Taken in context, however, it is impressive in its accurate depiction of space travel and attention to detail.<\/p>\n<p>The motivation for this lunar conquest was military:<\/p>\n<p>The story involves the decision for America to build a rocket capable of reaching the moon \u2013 and doing it before Russia does.\u00a0\u00a0 The country that controls the moon will control the Earth, and cold war paranoia fuels the mission of the rocket ship <i>Luna<\/i>.\u00a0 A private businessman finances the expedition where four American astronauts are to fly to the moon and establish a base, claiming the moon as American territory.\u00a0 But problems arise and they are not certain they have enough fuel to return to Earth.\u00a0 Drastic steps and heroic measures ensue.<\/p>\n<p>This stalwart crew consists mostly of noted scientists and engineers.\u00a0 The exception is Joe Sweeney (Dick Wesson) who is aboard for broad audience appeal.\u00a0 He\u2019s a Bronx-born guy who pronounces \u201cEarth\u201d as \u201coith\u201d and complains that the moon has \u201cno beer, no babes, no baseball.\u201d\u00a0 But when a payload crisis threatens the crew\u2019s safe return to Earth, it is Joe who rises to the occasion.\u00a0 It\u2019s all a bit nostalgic now, but <i>Destination Moon<\/i> is still a wonderful movie, bursting with the awe and enthusiasm that would eventually lead to \u201cone giant leap for mankind&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For its era, Destination Moon is a well written and scientifically solid story with great special effects.\u00a0 If you like Classic Sci-Fi movies, this is definitely one to watch.\u00a0 Amazon has it available on VHS, DVD and Instant Video.\u00a0 Here is the movie trailer:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QBEfpVkwWS4?rel=0\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you think humans will ever colonize the moon?\u00a0 If so, would you expect the purpose to be mainly military, scientific, manufacturing, or tourism?\u00a0 One thing we do know\u2026there will be pizza!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since I recently wound up my Adventures of Pizza Dude series, I could not resist sharing this headline and accompanying photos with you.
