{"id":4092,"date":"2012-09-16T06:00:24","date_gmt":"2012-09-16T10:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allandouglas.com\/blog\/?p=4092"},"modified":"2025-04-21T01:56:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T05:56:41","slug":"finding-our-potential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/finding-our-potential\/","title":{"rendered":"FINDING OUR POTENTIAL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Regardless of your views on religion, Dr. Metcalf&#8217;s comments on motivation and accomplishment are worth reading.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px; border: 0px none;\" src=\"http:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/AP.jpg\" alt=\"AP.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"315\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/>Sometimes we feel as if much of life is a waste of time.\u00a0 There is so much that is lost amid our many preoccupations.\u00a0 It seems impossible to make every moment count.\u00a0 We procrastinate.\u00a0 We daydream and we &#8220;while away&#8221; the time.\u00a0 So little of our attention is directed toward things that really matter.\u00a0 So often our focus is diverted to that which is peripheral and inconsequential.\u00a0 There is so much to do, and we do not have the time and energy to do it.\u00a0 There is so much to say and not enough words to say it.\u00a0 Where will we find the will to be all we are capable of being? Where is the heart for the difficult task and the perseverance for the weary journey?<\/p>\n<p>It is easy to give up when our vision exceeds our resources.\u00a0 Discouragement sets in when we see so much and accomplish so little.\u00a0 Often it is the cause for doing nothing.\u00a0 Why should we spin our wheels and never make progress toward our destination? If we cannot do everything, why do anything? Failure comes in different packages.\u00a0 Sometimes it is an over-exaggerated ambition.\u00a0 We lose ourselves before we get started.\u00a0 We bite off more than we can chew.\u00a0 We focus on the finishing before we have prepared for the beginning.\u00a0 Too much ambition can be as bad as no ambition.\u00a0 Often the results are the same.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>What then is our potential? Our greatest achievements may not come in trying to do everything, but in doing a few things well.\u00a0 Our greatest lessons may be in learning our weaknesses as well as our strengths.\u00a0 The ability to accept our limitations may equip us to highlight our possibilities.\u00a0 No one can be best at everything.\u00a0 Everyone can enjoy being who they are and how their gifts define them.\u00a0 Life is too short to be frustrated by the impossible.\u00a0 It is long enough, however, to pursue the possible and celebrate the joy of doing our best.<\/p>\n<p>We are blessed indeed when we find the power to persevere at the level of our personal performance.\u00a0 Our most depressing sin is trying to do more than or less than the level of our potential.\u00a0 Our most promising virtue is to work and to put our work in perspective as we leave the rest to God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Regardless of your views on religion, Dr. Metcalf&rsquo;s comments on motivation and accomplishment are worth reading.
