{"id":8377,"date":"2015-08-10T16:55:13","date_gmt":"2015-08-10T20:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dougbittinger.com\/thoughts\/?p=8377"},"modified":"2025-04-21T01:56:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T05:56:39","slug":"steampunk-war-of-the-worlds-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pineymountainfoster.org\/thoughts\/steampunk-war-of-the-worlds-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Steampunk War of the Worlds Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/PineyMountainFoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great-Martian-War.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8378\" src=\"https:\/\/PineyMountainFoster.org\/thoughts\/wp-content\/uploads\/Great-Martian-War-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Great Martian War\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>Anyone who knows me knows that I like classic Sci-fi, and that I dabble around with video.\u00a0 In my case the video is all very basic stuff and nearly all is centered around promoting our <a href=\"https:\/\/PineyMountainFoster.org\/phases-canine-rescue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">foster dogs<\/a> so they have a better chance of finding a forever home.<\/p>\n<p>Today I came across this video.\u00a0 Using World War I archival footage, some CGI, and reenactment footage, this short film shows what a Martian War of the Worlds would have looked like in 1914.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very well done.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/107454954\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/107454954\">Great martian war<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/user833510\">PLAZMA<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I have several versions of The War of the Worlds on DVD:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The original Paramount version set in the 1950s with the manta shaped flying machines and staring Gene Barry.\u00a0 Having read the book many times this version and it&#8217;s flying machines was a disappointment.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0 modern version staring Tom Cruise.\u00a0 Better but still not very faithful to the book.<\/li>\n<li>A 2005 Pendragon version set at the turn of the century (19th-20th) and staring Anthony Piana which uses jerky, stop action photography for the martian walking machines.\u00a0 The movie is long (180 minutes) and the acting is not the best, but I feel this one is most faithful to H.G Wells&#8217;s original manuscript.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Because I am such a fan of this book and the various movie take-offs, I very much enjoyed PLAZMA&#8217;s steampunk version, even though it&#8217;s just a few minutes long\u00a0 I hope you will too.\u00a0 If you do, the project has a web site at The Great Martian War, where more video clips and lots of photographs as well as info about the (fake) documentary they are working on are available.\u00a0 (NOTE: this web page was hosted by The History Channel and has since been taken down.\u00a0 I can find no replacement &#8220;home&#8221; for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who knows me knows that I like classic Sci-fi, and that I dabble around with video.&nbsp; In my case the video is all very basic stuff and nearly all is centered around promoting our foster dogs so they have a better chance of finding a forever home.
