I recently\u00a0posted\u00a0one of my step-by-step discussions of how we build a piece of furniture; the more interesting of these discussions from our In The Shop<\/strong><\/em> blog\u00a0become\u00a0permanent articles in the\u00a0library section of our custom furniture web site.<\/p>\n

\"oops,In this episode I discovered a mistake had been made in the piece of furniture and discussed my remedy for the error.\u00a0 Shortly after having posted the chapter I was hailed by a constant reader and frequent critic to ask, \u201cWhy in the world did you admit to having made a mistake?\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t that undermine peoples\u2019 confidence in your work?\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked him if he knew anyone who never, ever makes a mistake.\u00a0 What do you think of someone who claims to have never erred?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n

We all make mistakes now and again.\u00a0 How we handle those mistakes tells as much about us as does what kind of mistakes we make and how often we run afoul of them.\u00a0 Someone who cries and moans about things is generally met with a roll of the eyes and a \u201chere we go again\u201d look from their friends.\u00a0 No one wants to listen to someone wallowing in their misfortune, especially if it\u2019s their own fault.\u00a0 Someone who tries to sweep their blunders under a rug or blame them on someone else will garner no trust from others.<\/p>\n

Someone who can admit to having messed up, assess the situation and move on to a solution is just being a well adjusted human being.\u00a0\u00a0I like to think\u00a0such\u00a0was the case in this instance.\u00a0 I made a mistake in my calculations, devised a workable solution and executed it.\u00a0 If I attempt to portray myself as absolutely infallible others will see me as a puffed up bag of air.\u00a0 If I try to blame mistakes on\u2026 the dog\u2026 or simply deny them; I\u2019m a liar.\u00a0 But if I am honest and present a truthful picture of myself \u2013 warts and all \u2013 people will know that I can be trusted not to deceive them.<\/p>\n

At least that\u2019s my theory.\u00a0 I don\u2019t make a lot of mistakes, but when I do, I\u2019ll fess up to them and do my best to make it right.\u00a0 Life is just simpler that way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
