About Tanja

Tanja was born a packrat.  From her earliest years she loved accumulating stuff, and each Christmas submitted a long wish list to Santa.  Even at four years old she was heavily into collecting stickers.  By her early teen years she stepped it up to “serious accumulation mode” constantly prowling yard sales, thrift shops, the mall; any place she could find as a source for new additions to her collections of antique butterfly pins, concert ticket stubs, and random memorabilia.

But it was when she moved out on her own that she cranked it up to “turbo-charged gathering”.  Any blank space around her begged to be filled; and she filled them.

When she met the love of her life, Patrick, he was perfectly happy to live like a monk with two duffel bags of possessions and his trusty towel.  She did her best to convert him to be a fellow clutterer, but he resisted.

The seed of change was planted when they packed up her small, one bedroom apartment for a move to a cabin.  A minimalist friend, who they enjoyed socializing with, commented on the amount of stuff they were packing.  And then there was the truck.

She rented a truck for the move based on the guideline for a one bedroom apartment; a 10 foot box truck should be plenty.  It ended up requiring a 24 foot box truck and that was packed FULL.

There is nothing quite like having to pack, move, and unpack all your possessions to make you realize just how much stuff you really have.  Add to that the frustration of never being able to find the things she wanted.

Little things began to mount.  But it was a slice of geode that became the proverbial straw.  After this event, she decided to change her ways and took a harder look at Patrick’s way of life.  To find out exactly how that came about, you’ll need to pop over to Tanja’s blog and check out her My Story page.  It’s a very entertaining read and, for many of us, parts of it sound alarmingly familiar.
