Rocky Kanaka’s DOG for DOG business model might sound foolish to others in retail; he gives away at least as much product as he sells. But profit isn’t Kanaka’s driving force; his mission is to provide quality food to as many homeless dogs as possible.
Kanaka, owner of The Dog Bakery in Mar Vista California, created DOG for DOG® in late 2011 after feeling frustrated by not being better able to help dogs in need. The number of dogs in shelters grows daily and they suffer from a lack of proper nutrition and care.
So Kanaka started DOG for DOG to provide high-quality, all-natural treats and food. He implemented a “buy-one, give-one” business model, which means that every time someone buys treats or dog food, an equal amount is given to a dog in need.
DOG for DOG partnered with Tractor Supply Co in 2016. to reach into rural retail markets and feed even more dogs in need. As a retail partner, Tractor Supply is carrying a select line of DOG for DOG’s natural-ingredient, made-in-USA treats – DOGSTREATS in Mini Duck,Chicken, and Peanut Butter flavors and DOGSBUTTER Skin & Coat, which is healthier than processed store-bought peanut butter and great for disguising medicine and filling hollow toys.
It’s not the first time the two companies have partnered. Tractor Supply is a sponsor and supporter of the CW’s television series, “Save Our Shelter”, hosted by Kanaka. Check your local listing and catch it on weekends on The CW as part of One Magnificent Morning.
“It is because of partnerships with companies like Tractor Supply, who have the same vision as we do, that we are able to turn a dream into a reality of helping to feed thousands of homeless animals in shelters and rescues across the country.” Kanaka says. “We are so excited to have them as official DOG for DOG partners.”
