A Snooze Button for My Brain

snooze buttonDaylight savings time ended last night and we turned back the clocks before we went to bed.  A good thing right? We get an extra hour of sleep!  Or most do.

If you depend on an alarm clock to get you up in the morning: congratulations on your extra hour of rest.  I haven’t used an alarm clock in close to two decades.  I have an internal clock that wakes me each morning between 4:00 and 4:30. Usually.  On some occasions, when I was feeling poorly, it lets me get some extra rest.

It worked reliably for me this morning, my eyes popped open as my brain played reveille – time to get up!  I checked my watch (reset to standard time): 3:00.  “No, no, no, Brain, remember: the time changed.”

“Don’t care about that: it’s time, get up”

Actually The Big Three Bs (Brain, Bladder & Bowels) have a conspiracy.  They work in concert to be sure I get out of bed when it’s time.  I appeased the latter two, then told the former that I was going back to bed for one more hour.  We argued about that for a while as I tossed, trying to find a comfortable position in which to lie.  Brain was bringing the Shoulder brothers and Lower Back into his power play.  Finally Brain relented, “Okay … one hour.  But you OWE me!”

I awoke again. Checked my watch: 4:30.  It had taken me about a half-hour to get to sleep, so Brain was good to his word, one hour.  Good enough; time to get up, flip on the coffee maker and get to my studies.

But first this bit of silliness insists on being written down.  Now … on to my studies.
